About the Property

Full Board at the Mngazi River Mouth

Umngazi Hotel & Spa is a full-board resort hotel at the mouth of the Mngazi River, south of Port St Johns on the Wild Coast. The hotel puts it 20 km from town, and LekkeSlaap gives 26 km. It is rated 4.7 out of 5 on LekkeSlaap from 19 reviews, with cleanliness scored 4.9. Its 63 bungalows and suites sleep 142 and face the garden, the river or the sea. They range from couple and family bungalows to honeymoon bungalows, Emlonyeni deluxe seafront bungalows and Ntabeni luxury suites. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all included.

The spa sits high above the river with views of the coast, and there is a swimming pool, a gym and a tennis court. On the water you can paddle-board, kayak, fish or take a sunset cruise on the river. On land there are guided hikes, mountain biking and sandboarding, and the hotel has a private beach at the river mouth. Families get bungalows with bunk beds for the children, a games room and babysitting, while the couple bungalows do not take children under 12.

The hotel is 90 km from Mthatha, where Airlink flies in from Johannesburg, and it says the road is tarred all the way to its turn-off. The final stretch is not always well maintained, so drive in daylight. LekkeSlaap reviewers often mention the food and the staff. One wrote: "Great family getaway with young kids. Fantastic holiday, great food, friendly staff."

Mthatha: Head through Mthatha via Mandela Boulevard and Madeira Street (N2), then turn right onto the R61 towards Port St Johns and follow it to the marked Umngazi turn-off. The hotel says the 90 km road is tarred all the way to the turn-off.

Durban / KwaZulu-Natal: About 390 km and 6 hours. Take the N2 to Port Shepstone, then go via Port Edward, Bizana, Flagstaff and Lusikisiki on the R61. At Flagstaff, use the hotel's signed detour: turn right before the Shoprite and rejoin the R61. After crossing the Umzimvubu River bridge, turn right and drive about 10 km to the Umngazi turn-off. Watch for potholes, unmarked speed bumps, cattle, donkeys, taxis and pedestrians. The final 12 km is not always well maintained.

East London: About 4.5 hours; the hotel recommends driving in daylight.

By air: Airlink flies from Johannesburg (OR Tambo) to Mthatha, 90 km away, and transfers can be booked with Sun Shuttles. From Cape Town there are no direct flights to Mthatha; fly to East London instead. The hotel also mentions weekly chartered Friday flights from Durban's Virginia Airport to Port St Johns, with transfers included.
