Land of Vast Horizons
Namibia: History & Culture
Namibia’s dry lands have been home to San, Damara and Nama hunter-gatherers and herders for millennia, joined from around the 14th century by Bantu-speaking farmers moving south. Germany claimed the territory as German South West Africa in 1884, and its rule brought the Herero and Nama genocide of 1904–08. South Africa administered the territory from 1920, extending apartheid after 1948, until SWAPO’s liberation struggle and United Nations pressure led to independence on 21 March 1990. Namibia has since built one of Africa’s most stable democracies around vast deserts, a 1,572 km Atlantic coastline and some of the continent’s richest wildlife.
