The zig-zag road from KwaZulu-Natal up to the Lesotho plateau
Sani Pass: The Drakensberg Escarpment Route into Lesotho: History & Culture
Sani Pass is the zig-zag road that climbs from the foothills near Underberg and Himeville in KwaZulu-Natal, up the Drakensberg escarpment, to the Lesotho plateau. The Lesotho border post sits at the summit. It is one of the best-known 4×4 routes in Southern Africa, and it links the Southern Drakensberg to Mokhotlong on the Lesotho side.
The pass starts near Underberg and Himeville in the south of the Southern Drakensberg. From the N3 turn-off it is about 110 km to Underberg. From there it is about 43 km up the pass to the Lesotho border.
Entry fees, visa rules for Lesotho and vehicle restrictions on the South African side are not covered here. Check them with the relevant authorities before you go.
Early spring, from September to mid-October, is the time for wildflowers. Winter is the time for skiing. South African Tourism mentions the nearby ski resorts of Oxbow in Lesotho and Afriski. The drive itself is quoted at about 2 hours in good weather, so plan around conditions on the escarpment.
The climb up the escarpment is the main event. Guided 4×4 day trips from Underberg are the most common way to do it.
Wikipedia gives the summit as 2,876 m. From the top you look out over the Drakensberg and the Lesotho plateau. The pub at Sani Mountain Escape (long known as Sani Mountain Lodge, or Sani Top Chalet) is billed as the highest pub in Africa, at about 2,874 m. The two figures differ slightly, so treat both as approximate.
The pass is a birding destination. Species to look for include the bearded vulture and the Cape vulture.
The route was used historically by the San and later by Bantu-speaking peoples. The dates below trace how it became a vehicle road.
The road has also had a long-running tarring project. Phase 1 (14 km) was completed in September 2012. Phase 2 was approved in 2014, but as of May 2021 it was largely incomplete and Phase 3 had not started. The current state of the road has not been verified, so check before you travel. The pass also gained international exposure through a Top Gear episode shot in South Africa and Lesotho.
The pub at Sani Mountain Escape is the well-known stop at the summit. According to South African Tourism, the hostelry serves home-cooked soups and breads, and the pub has a fireside atmosphere. Search descriptions mention a Swiss-chalet-style lounge with a wood-burner. Restaurants in Underberg and Himeville have not been researched for this page.
Sani Mountain Escape, at the Lesotho summit, is the lodge with the highest pub in Africa: rondavels with en-suite bathrooms and fireplaces, rated 4.1/5 from 879 Google reviews, the largest review sample of any stay researched for this project so far. There are also guest houses in Underberg and Himeville on the South African side, not yet verified for this page. Reaching Sani Mountain Escape means the same 4×4 route and border crossing described above.
The pass links KwaZulu-Natal with the mountain kingdom of Lesotho, so it pairs naturally with a wider Lesotho itinerary.
