Western Province: History & Culture

Discover Western Province

Western Province is the heartland of Barotseland, the historic kingdom of the Lozi people on the upper Zambezi. Long semi-autonomous under its own king, the Litunga, Barotseland accepted British protection through the 1890 Lochner Concession, and its status was set out in the 1964 Barotseland Agreement at Zambia’s independence. Each year, as the rains flood the Barotse Floodplain, the Litunga moves from Lealui to higher ground at Limulunga in the Kuomboka ceremony, paddled there in the royal barge Nalikwanda. The province also holds Ngonye Falls on the Zambezi, far less visited than Victoria Falls upstream, and Liuwa Plain National Park, home to Africa’s second-largest wildebeest migration.
