Manica: History & Culture

Discover Manica

Manica takes its name from a medieval gold-trading kingdom whose reach once ran deep into the highlands on today’s Zimbabwe border. Portugal formalised control here only in 1891, through the Mozambique Company, and the goldfields around the modern town of Manica are still worked. The province’s real draw for travellers is above ground: Monte Binga, at 2,436 m the highest peak in Mozambique, rises inside the Chimanimani range. Protected as a national reserve from 2003 and upgraded to national park status in 2020, Chimanimani’s mist-forests and cave paintings remain one of the country’s least-visited wild places.
