Mafeteng District: History & Culture

Discover Mafeteng District

Mafeteng District covers Lesotho’s western lowlands and the Makhaleng River’s sandstone valley, an agricultural belt bordering South Africa’s Free State. Its best-known village, Malealea, began as an English trading post around 1900 and was converted into a lodge in 1986; it remains the country’s classic gateway to Basotho pony trekking, with routes to waterfalls and villages across the surrounding gorge country. Further north on the road to Semonkong, Ramabanta grew from a 1939 trading store perched on a cliff above the same river valley. Mafeteng town itself is the district’s market centre for maize, beans and wool.
