Eswatini's Quiet Southern Frontier
Shiselweni Region: History & Culture
Shiselweni takes its name from the district where King Ngwane III, founder of the modern Swazi kingdom, established his capital in the 18th century — making this Eswatini’s most historically significant region even though it now sees the fewest visitors. Nhlangano, the regional capital and the country’s fourth-largest town, sits on the Ngwavuma River and hosted a landmark 1947 meeting between Britain’s King George VI and King Sobhuza II. Chiefly rural and mountainous, Shiselweni forms Eswatini’s southern border with South Africa, and is home to Christian and, in Hlatikulu, Muslim communities alike.
