Ts’ehlanyane National Park: Lesotho’s Indigenous Forest Reserve: History & Culture

Discover Ts’ehlanyane National Park: Lesotho’s Indigenous Forest Reserve

Ts’ehlanyane National Park protects one of Lesotho’s few stands of indigenous forest, in the northern Maluti Mountains of Leribe District. Between 1,940m and 3,112m, it is sub-alpine terrain, reached by a tarred road about 45 minutes from the South African border at Caledonspoort. It is the park most visitors combine with Maliba Lodge, the five-star ecolodge built inside its boundaries, and one of the more accessible of Lesotho’s highland parks thanks to that tarred approach road.

Quick facts

  • District: Leribe District, northern Lesotho
  • Altitude range: 1,940m to 3,112m
  • Access: a 32km tarred road off the A1, 8km south of Butha-Buthe, through Khabo village and the Holomo valley
  • Border: about 45 minutes’ drive from Caledonspoort on the South African border
  • Lodging inside the park: Maliba Lodge
  • Managed by: Lesotho Northern Parks, the same body that runs Bokong Nature Reserve

Getting there from South Africa

Because the park sits only about 45 minutes from Caledonspoort, it is a realistic add-on for a South African itinerary through the eastern Free State, rather than requiring a deep detour into Lesotho’s interior the way Katse Dam or Sehlabathebe National Park do. Fouriesburg is the nearest South African town on the other side of Caledonspoort; confirm the border post’s current opening hours before planning a same-day crossing in either direction, since Lesotho’s smaller border posts do not all keep 24-hour hours.

A rare stand of indigenous forest

Most of Lesotho’s highlands are open grassland and heath, so Ts’ehlanyane’s forest is unusual in itself. Its Leucosidea sericea (known locally as oldwood or ouhout) grows to a substantial size here, and the undergrowth includes rare species found nowhere else in the park system. Along the riverbanks, dense stands of berg bamboo (Thamnocalamus tessellatus) may be the single most important refuge for that plant across the entire Maloti-Drakensberg range.

Things to do

  • Hiking: trails range from short forest walks to the Holomo Pass bridle path.
  • The Bokong link: a 39km multi-day trail connects Ts’ehlanyane to Bokong Nature Reserve to the south, for hikers prepared for several days in the mountains.
  • Horse riding and birdwatching: offered through Maliba Lodge, which operates inside the park.
  • Spa and viewing deck: Maliba Lodge’s facilities are open to lodge guests overlooking the forest and river.
  • Swimming and waterfalls: Maliba Lodge lists waterfalls and rock-pool swimming among its guided activities inside the park.
  • Dinosaur footprint tours: also offered through the lodge, part of the wider pattern of dinosaur trackways found across Lesotho’s sandstone country.

Why the forest matters

Lesotho’s highlands were largely stripped of woodland long before living memory, by grazing, frost and fire, so a genuine indigenous forest is a rarity worth protecting deliberately rather than something travellers should expect to find casually on a highlands drive. Ts’ehlanyane’s Leucosidea and berg bamboo stands are a reminder of what much of the wider Maloti-Drakensberg range likely looked like in sheltered valleys before centuries of livestock pressure, which is part of why conservationists rate the park’s berg bamboo refuge so highly relative to its modest size.

Where to stay

Maliba Lodge is the park’s only lodge, offering five-star Mountain Chalets alongside more affordable River Lodge and Riverside Hut options; see our separate Maliba Lodge page for its rating and details. Camping is also possible in the park; check current rules and fees with Lesotho Northern Parks before you go.

Planning your visit

  • Allow about 45 minutes from the Caledonspoort border post, or roughly the same from Butha-Buthe town.
  • Pack for sub-alpine weather: temperatures swing widely between day and night at this altitude.
  • Combine with Afriski or Moteng Pass if you are already exploring Butha-Buthe District, just to the north.
  • Book Maliba Lodge activities (horse riding, spa, guided hikes) in advance.
  • If attempting the 39km trail to Bokong, plan for several days, carry the right mountain equipment and consider a guide.

Ts’ehlanyane National Park is at approximately latitude -28.9142, longitude 28.4364.
