Thaba-Tseka District: History & Culture

Discover Thaba-Tseka District

Thaba-Tseka is Lesotho’s most mountainous district, centred on an administrative town built at 2,200m to open up the remote eastern highlands. It is dominated by the Lesotho Highlands Water Project: Katse Dam, completed in 1996, holds the record as Africa’s highest-elevation dam at 1,993m, and its reservoir flooded a valley whose plants were rescued into the Katse Botanical Garden. West of the dam, beyond the Mafika-Lisiu Pass, Bokong Nature Reserve protects Afro-alpine wetland at 2,800 to 3,200m, where the Lepaqoa waterfall freezes solid most winters.
