Reefs, a lighthouse and island life at the mouth of Maputo Bay
Inhaca Island: History & Culture
Inhaca Island (Ilha da Inhaca) lies at the mouth of Maputo Bay in Mozambique, roughly 30 to 40 km off Maputo. Sources give slightly different distances, but all agree it is close enough to work as a day trip or an overnight add-on to a stay in the city. About 52 km² in area, it is home to around 6,000 people, a research station, a lighthouse and a good deal of marine life.
Most visitors cross by ferry from the Maputo port and marina area. The crossing takes about two hours, and up to about 2.5 hours when the wind is up. Other ways across include:
Ferry timetables and fares are reported differently by different sources. One lists two ferries, the larger Kanyaka and the smaller Ribwene, with morning departures and a mid-afternoon return. Another lists a government boat on different days and at different times. Confirm the current schedule and fares locally before you plan your trip.
One source advises arriving an hour early. It also notes extra costs on arrival: a small-boat transfer to shore and an island tax that depends on citizenship. The nearest mainland airport is Maputo International Airport.
The British occupied Inhaca from 1823 until the MacMahon Treaty of 24 July 1875, and used the island against slave trafficking. After that it was Portuguese territory.
Today most residents live in Inhaca village on the western shore. Fishing is the traditional livelihood, but stocks have declined. Mussel aquaculture and tourism are emerging as other sources of income.
The museum is linked to the university research station on the island. Its exhibits cover the island’s animal, insect, plant and fish life. We could not find opening hours or an entry fee, so check locally before you go.
Inhaca is known for its coral, with about 160 coral species recorded. Reef condition needs an honest note, though. Wikipedia reports that the two reefs off the western shore are badly damaged and that control of the marine area is lacking. Travel sites still promote reef snorkelling, so go with realistic expectations and choose a responsible operator.
Divers can visit the "Pirolito" tugboat wreck, at depths of 8 to 25 m. Dana Tours is one operator that runs diving on the island.
About 3 km away, this uninhabited islet is reached by boat from Inhaca. It has a lagoon and is used for snorkelling and picnics.
The lighthouse stands at the northern tip of the island. Tours include a tractor ride to reach it.
On the far side of the island, the Santa Maria Peninsula and the Santa Maria Wall (Ponte Torres) are reached on foot, and walks to Santa Maria are among the things to do.
About 300 bird species have been recorded on the island. Dolphins and sea turtles are among the marine wildlife. Southern right whales are described as rare today.
You can also visit the island’s village. Fishing parties are on offer at Nahyeeni Lodge. Operators such as Mussiro run tours on the island.
Accommodation on the island ranges from lodges to self-catering villas, houses and campsites. Two options we researched:
Check current rates and availability directly with each property.
Island restaurants and bars serve local seafood with a Portuguese-African influence, and some have live music. Lodge restaurants, such as the one at Villa Martins, are a straightforward option.
Inhaca works well as a one-night escape or a full day away from Maputo. Add a snorkel, a lighthouse tour and a boat trip to Portuguese Island, and you have a full island itinerary.
