Ponta do Ouro: Travel Guide to the Southernmost Beach Town in Mozambique: History & Culture

Discover Ponta do Ouro: Travel Guide to the Southernmost Beach Town in Mozambique

Ponta do Ouro sits at the extreme southern tip of Mozambique, about 15 km north of the South African border and roughly 130 km south of Maputo. A single, roughly 7 km arc of beach, backed by low dunes and bordered by rocky reefs at each end, has made it one of Southern Africa’s best-known dive and dolphin-watching destinations, and a popular weekend and self-drive trip for South African visitors crossing the nearby border post.

Ponta do Ouro at a glance

  • Country: Mozambique
  • Province: Maputo
  • Distance to South African border: about 15 km
  • Distance to Maputo: about 130 km
  • Beach length: about 7 km
  • Known for: resident bottlenose and spinner dolphins, diving, deep-sea fishing
  • Adjoining protected area: Maputo National Park’s marine section (formerly the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve, merged in 2021)

Dolphins and diving

Bottlenose and spinner dolphins are present off Ponta do Ouro year-round and are regularly seen both from boats and while diving or snorkelling, making the town one of the more reliable dolphin-encounter destinations on this stretch of coast. Dive sites range from around 10 m at the sheltered Crèche site to about 47 m at Atlantis, spread between roughly 1 km and 12 km from the main beach launch site, with reef life including sharks, rays, manta rays, barracuda and sea turtles alongside the dolphins.

Why it is part of a larger protected coastline

The waters off Ponta do Ouro were protected from 2009 as the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve, before merging on 7 December 2021 with the Maputo Special Reserve to form Maputo National Park, covered on this site as its own attraction page. That merger ties Ponta do Ouro’s reefs directly into a larger conservation area that also includes elephant-bearing dune forest just to the north, and the two are often visited together.

What to see and do

Diving and snorkelling

A cluster of dive operators based in the village run daily trips to the reef sites described above, catering to both certified divers and snorkellers.

Deep-sea fishing

The deep water close offshore makes Ponta do Ouro a noted deep-sea fishing base, alongside its diving reputation, though specific operator and catch data were not verified in this research pass.

The beach itself

The long, dune-backed beach, with rocky headlands at each end, is the town’s main draw for visitors not diving, with beachfront bars and restaurants clustered around the village centre.

Getting there

Most visitors reach Ponta do Ouro by self-drive from South Africa, crossing at the Kosi Bay/Ponta do Ouro border post around 15 km to the south; the final stretch of road within Mozambique is sandy and a 4×4 is generally recommended. It can also be reached by road from Maputo, about 130 km to the north, or via transfer/charter flight arrangements offered by some lodges. Confirm current border-crossing requirements and road conditions before travelling.

Nearby: Maputo National Park

Ponta do Ouro sits immediately south of Maputo National Park, whose marine section was itself the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve before the December 2021 merger. Many visitors combine a few days on the beach at Ponta do Ouro with an elephant-focused game drive in the park’s dune forest just to the north, covered on this site as its own attraction page, making the area workable as a short two-in-one break from either Maputo or South Africa.

Best time to visit

May to November, the dry season, gives calmer seas and better diving visibility; this stretch of the far south stays drier than the rest of Mozambique’s coast year-round.

Where to stay

Ponta do Ouro has a range of lodges, guesthouses and campsites aimed largely at South African self-drive visitors. Ponta Gamboozini Lodge, close to the main beach, is covered on this site as a verified, well-rated option.
