Sofala: History & Culture

Discover Sofala

Sofala takes its name from the medieval port sultanate that once shipped gold from the African interior to Arab and Indian trading dhows, a coastal power the Portuguese sought out from the early 1500s. Beira, 35 km north of the old port ruins, grew from a Portuguese trading base staked out in 1884 into Mozambique’s second city and busiest port. Cyclone Idai devastated Beira in March 2019, and the province is still rebuilding. Inland, Gorongosa National Park, proclaimed in 1960 and nearly emptied by the civil war, is now one of Africa’s best-known conservation recoveries.
