Erongo Region: History & Culture
Erongo takes its name from the granite Erongo Mountain at its heart and stretches from the Namib Desert to Namibia’s only deep-water port at Walvis Bay. Swakopmund, the regional capital, was founded in 1892 as German South West Africa’s main harbour and still carries its colonial-era architecture. Walvis Bay’s history is more complicated: apartheid-era South Africa kept the port and its rich fishing grounds as an exclave even after Namibian independence, transferring sovereignty to Namibia only on 1 March 1994. Fishing, uranium and marble mining, and coastal and desert-adventure tourism now anchor the regional economy.
