Etosha & Oshana: History & Culture
Oshana lies in Namibia’s densely populated north, where the seasonal wetlands known as oshanas — part of the wider Cuvelai drainage system — give the region its name and its rhythm of life. Oshakati, the regional capital, anchors an urban cluster with Ongwediva and Ondangwa that ranks second only to Windhoek in population. Oshiwambo culture and language dominate daily life here. After good rains, Lake Oponono fills with flamingos, pelicans and storks, while the region’s plains extend south toward Etosha Pan, making Oshana a convenient northern base for exploring Etosha National Park’s wildlife.
