Cradle of Humankind (Maropeng): Fossil Caves Near Johannesburg: History & Culture

Discover Cradle of Humankind (Maropeng): Fossil Caves Near Johannesburg

The Cradle of Humankind is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Gauteng. It sits about 40 to 50 km north-west of Johannesburg, and Maropeng is its official visitor centre. The area covers 47,000 ha of countryside. Under the ground are dolomitic limestone caves that have given up one of the richest fossil records in the study of human evolution. You can visit as an easy day trip from Johannesburg or Pretoria, or use it as the start of a weekend in the Magaliesberg countryside. It is worth visiting all year round.

Why the Cradle of Humankind matters

UNESCO listed the Cradle as a World Heritage Site in 1999, under the official name Fossil Hominid Sites of South Africa. South African Tourism counts 13 official fossil sites across the area. The fossils have survived inside limestone caves, often set in a cemented rock called breccia.

Several of the best-known finds in human-origins research came from these caves:

  • Mrs Ples (Australopithecus africanus), found at Sterkfontein in 1947
  • Little Foot, an Australopithecus skeleton, found at Sterkfontein in 1997
  • Australopithecus sediba, found at Malapa in 2008
  • Homo naledi, from Rising Star Cave, announced in 2015

Sterkfontein stands out even here. According to Wikipedia, it alone produced more than a third of the early hominid fossils found before 2010. Other named sites include Swartkrans, Kromdraai and Gladysvale.

Top attractions

A visit usually covers two places with two separate tickets: the Maropeng Visitor Centre and the Sterkfontein Caves. Most people do both on the same day.

Maropeng Visitor Centre

Maropeng opened on 7 December 2005. It describes itself as an award-winning, world-class exhibition about the development of humans. The self-guided, interactive tour begins with the formation of the planet and includes fossils and stone tools up to one million years old.

  • Address: Hekpoort Road, Sterkfontein, 1911 Magaliesburg
  • Hours: 09:00 to 16:00 daily, including weekends and public holidays
  • Time needed: about 45 to 60 minutes. Arrive 15 minutes before your booked slot
  • Tickets: adults R150, children aged 6 to 11 R125, pensioners R100 (ID needed), under-6s free. Buy online or when you arrive

Sterkfontein Caves

Wits University runs Sterkfontein Caves, on Kromdraai Road, Sterkfontein, Krugersdorp. The only way in is on a guided tour through the cave where Mrs Ples and Little Foot were found.

  • Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 16:00. Closed on Mondays, 25 December and 31 December
  • Tours: one every hour from 09:00 to 15:00, up to 30 people each, lasting about 1 to 1.5 hours
  • Tickets: adults R150, children aged 6 to 18 R125, pensioners R100, under-6s free (a maximum of 2 per adult). The exhibition and prep lab alone cost R80. Entry is free on your birthday if you show ID
  • Booking: through Webtickets or on site

The cave stays at a constant 20°C. It is not wheelchair accessible and does not suit anyone with claustrophobia. Wear closed, non-slip shoes.

The other fossil sites

Swartkrans, Kromdraai, Malapa and Rising Star Cave are working scientific sites and are not normally open to the public. South African Tourism says special walking tours can take you to some of them, so ask about these in advance if you want to go beyond the two main venues.

Things to do in the Cradle

The Cradle is also a rural stretch of countryside on the Johannesburg side of the Magaliesberg, next to Magaliesburg, Muldersdrift and Hartbeespoort. Apart from the caves and exhibitions, South African Tourism lists these activities:

  • Hot-air balloon flights over the Cradle
  • Horse trails
  • Cycle tracks
  • Guided cave tours
  • Special walking tours to fossil sites that are normally closed

For families, the Maropeng exhibition is self-guided and interactive, so children can go at their own pace. Children under six get in free at both Maropeng and Sterkfontein.

Where to eat

  • Tumulus Restaurant, Maropeng: formal dining with views over the Magaliesberg.
  • Market Place, Maropeng: Maropeng’s casual option, alongside the hotel restaurant.
  • Cafeterias: both Maropeng and Sterkfontein Caves have one, which is handy between tours.
  • Roots, Forum Homini: fine dining with modern cuisine and a South African twist, made mostly with local ingredients. It is listed by 50Best Discovery.
