North West Province: History & Culture
North West Province was carved out of the old Transvaal when South Africa’s provinces were redrawn in 1994. It stretches from the densely populated mining belt around Rustenburg to the vast bushveld of the Kalahari. The province is home to the Pilanesberg caldera — an ancient 1.3-billion-year-old alkaline ring complex that today cradles one of South Africa’s premier Big Five reserves.
Heritage & Landmarks
Big Five game reserve set inside an ancient volcanic crater — 55,000 hectares of bushveld.
Africa's answer to Las Vegas — Gary Player courses, the Palace Hotel and the Valley of Waves.
The Bushveld Igneous Complex holds 80% of the world's known platinum reserves.
Among the oldest mountain ranges on Earth — ancient quartzite ridges rich in rock art.
