Granite Hills and the Border South
Matabeleland South Province: History & Culture
Matabeleland South was created in 1974, when the original Matabeleland Province was split into north and south. Semi-arid and on the edge of the Kalahari, the province is Zimbabwe’s least densely populated, its economy resting on subsistence and livestock farming. Rhodes Matopos National Park, now Matobo National Park, was Cecil Rhodes’s 1926 bequest and became Zimbabwe’s oldest national park; UNESCO inscribed the wider Matobo Hills in 2003 for their rock art and San spiritual sites. Rhodes himself is buried at World’s View. Beitbridge, the province’s largest town, is Zimbabwe’s busiest border crossing into South Africa.
