📍 Ponta Chemucane · Maputo National Park (Maputo Special Reserve): Travel Guide · Mozambique
A canvas-and-thatch beach lodge on a five-kilometre coastal concession at Ponta Chemucane, southern Mozambique.
About the Property
Anvil Bay is a beach lodge at Ponta Chemucane, inside Maputo Special Reserve (Maputo National Park). It is owned by the local community and run by a trust set up for the community's benefit. The lodge sits on a five-kilometre coastal concession.
The reserve was established in the 1930s to protect the last coastal elephant herd in the region. It covers 1,040 km² of lakes, wetlands, sand forest, grassland and mangrove. The lodge's 10 Casinhas are canvas-walled, thatch-roofed units on stilted timber decks in the dune forest. Each has its own stretch of beachfront, and the lodge's site gives a maximum capacity of 18 guests.
Each unit has an indoor bathroom with an outdoor shower, a private deck and fine linen. Meals are served at a central beach bar, lounge and restaurant, and there are campfire areas. Activities include guided drives, birding, snorkelling, kayaking and fishing. Turtle walks run from October to March and whale viewing from July to November. Getting here takes about 3 hours by road from Maputo, including a 2-hour safari portion, or about 30 minutes by private charter helicopter from Maputo International Airport.
