Nelson Mandela's former Houghton home, restored as a nine-room heritage hotel with his own chef's recipes on the menu
About the Property
Sanctuary Mandela occupies the Houghton Estate house that Nelson Mandela made his home following his release from prison, living there until 1998 and welcoming family, friends, dignitaries and world leaders through its doors. The house later played a role in establishing the Nelson Mandela Foundation before being thoughtfully restored and reopened as a nine-room heritage hotel, where history, hospitality and legacy are meant to sit side by side.
Guest rooms and suites are named for moments and names from Mandela's own life — 466/64, David Motsamayi and Accused No. 1 among the Classic Rooms; Rolihlahla and Madiba among the Deluxe Rooms; Tata, Nel and Nelson among the Executive Suites. The Mr President Signature Suite is Mandela's own former 50m² bedroom, with a lounge area, garden view and dinner at Insights Restaurant included. Every stay includes breakfast, a complimentary guided heritage tour of the house and round-the-clock tea and coffee service from a dedicated butler.
Insights Restaurant serves contemporary South African food built on recipes from Xoliswa Ndoyiya, Mandela's personal chef for 22 years, and the property also runs a heritage dining experience, Dine Like Madiba, combining a five-course tasting menu with guided storytelling in the home itself.
