Stone-and-thatch rondavels in Semonkong, a one-hour hike from Maletsunyane Falls.
About the Property
Semonkong Lodge is a mountain lodge in the village of Semonkong, in Lesotho's Maseru District, about 130 km and roughly three hours by road from Maseru. It offers en-suite rondavels on three levels, two self-catering dormitory rondavels and a camping site, so it suits a range of budgets. Many of the rondavels have fireplaces, and the top level has river views.
The lodge is a base for the area's outdoor activities. Maletsunyane Falls is about a one-hour hike away, and the lodge offers a 204 m abseil beside it. You can also book day rides or overnight treks on Basotho ponies with village stays, fly-fishing, 4x4 trips, guided hikes, mountain biking and community tours. Horses are available for novices and children, with helmets supplied.
Meals and drinks are at the Duck and Donkey Tavern, the lodge restaurant and bar, which serves home-cooked food and Maluti beer. The tavern also gives its name to the donkey pub crawl. There is a coffee shop and satellite Wi-Fi on site. Plan ahead for the practicalities: there is no ATM in Semonkong (the nearest is in Roma), and the town's power is off from 10pm to about 8am.
