Lesotho's Roof: Sani Pass and the High Maluti
Mokhotlong District: History & Culture
Mokhotlong District covers Lesotho’s highest and most remote terrain, its only town sitting at 2,512m in the eastern Maluti Mountains. Thabana Ntlenyana, at 3,482m the highest peak in Southern Africa, rises on the Mohlesi ridge just north of Sani Pass, the switchback road that climbs the Drakensberg escarpment from KwaZulu-Natal to a border post at the summit. On the Lesotho side, Sani Mountain Escape claims to be the highest pub in Africa, at 2,874m. The district’s rivers, including the source of the Senqu, Lesotho’s principal watershed, feed water projects and grazing land across the country.
