Mbabane & Malolotja Nature Reserve
Hhohho Region: History & Culture
Hhohho is Eswatini’s most economically developed region, home to both the administrative capital Mbabane and the royal, legislative capital Lobamba, seat of King Mswati III. The Ezulwini Valley — the “Valley of Heaven” — runs through its heart, hosting the King Sobhuza II Memorial Park and the annual Incwala and Umhlanga royal ceremonies. Piggs Peak, founded around gold prospecting in 1884, and the forestry town of Bulembu lie in the mountainous north. Long before that, the Ngwenya hills nearby were mined for red ochre and haematite from around 41,000 years ago, among the oldest mining activity known anywhere.
