Skilpadshek is Afrikaans for "tortoise gate". It is the South African end of the N4 and the crossing to Pioneer Gate in Botswana. It is open from 06:00 to midnight, not 24 hours, so plan to arrive well before it closes.

Where Skilpadshek border post is

Skilpadshek is in North West province, about 55 km north-west of Zeerust by road. Its coordinates are about 25.276°S, 25.714°E (Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons). The N4 leads west from Zeerust to the post. In Botswana the road becomes the A2, the paved Trans-Kalahari highway that runs towards Lobatse and the rest of the country.

  • To Zeerust: about 55 km, roughly 46 minutes by the OpenStreetMap route planner (OSRM, checked 13 October 2026).
  • To Lobatse: about 16 km, roughly 20 minutes (same planner).
  • To Gaborone: about 81 km, roughly 72 minutes (same planner).

Not to be confused with: Ramatlabama is a different crossing, further west, on the Mahikeng to Lobatse road. Kopfontein (Tlokweng) is another post on the Botswana line, on the road to Gaborone. If you are driving the N4 from Zeerust, Skilpadshek and Pioneer Gate is the post you want.

Botswana immigration lists these numbers for Pioneer: +267 533 0225 and +267 530 1161 (April 2025 list).

  • March 2025: travel news reported on 5 March 2025 that Botswana’s revenue service (BURS) had issued a travel advisory about Pioneer Gate (ATC News).

For a closure on the day, call SARS on 0800 00 7277 or the BURS call centre on 17649.

How to cross, step by step

Leaving South Africa

  • Stop at the South African side for exit immigration and customs.
  • Have your passport and vehicle papers ready.

Entering Botswana

  • Complete Botswana immigration and have your passport stamped.
  • Botswana’s revenue service requires everyone arriving or leaving to declare goods on a baggage declaration, Form J (BURS).
  • Drivers show their vehicle papers and pay the Botswana vehicle charges on this side.

Queues and best times

We do not quote waiting times, because no official figures are published. The A2 is paved, so you do not need a 4×4. Arrive well before midnight.
