Lubombo Region: History & Culture
Lubombo, Eswatini’s easternmost region, is dominated by hot lowveld and the volcanic Lubombo Mountains that form the border with Mozambique. It holds the country’s premier wildlife estate: Hlane Royal National Park, once the private hunting ground of the Swazi monarchy and today the only place in Eswatini with free-roaming lions, and Mkhaya Game Reserve, which has protected black rhino since a herd arrived from South Africa in 1995. Mlawula and Mbuluzi Nature Reserves add further lowveld wilderness. Siteki, the regional capital, sits on a Lubombo Mountains ridge overlooking the plains below.
