From Pietersburg to Polokwane: Limpopo's Capital

Polokwane was founded in 1886 by Voortrekkers and named Pietersburg after Voortrekker leader Petrus Jacobus Joubert. During the Second Anglo-Boer War it briefly served as the joint capital of the Transvaal and Orange Free State republics before British forces occupied the town.

The region's deeper context reaches much further back: the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site, a few hours north, marks an Iron Age kingdom that flourished roughly a thousand years ago and traded gold and ivory as far as China and India. In the city itself, the Bakone Malapa Open-Air Museum reconstructs Northern Sotho homestead life from about 250 years ago.

Pietersburg was declared a city on 23 April 1992, and in 1994 became capital of the newly created Northern Transvaal province, later renamed Limpopo. On 25 February 2005 it was officially renamed Polokwane, Sepedi for 'place of safety'. Modern Polokwane has hosted major national moments, including the ANC's 2007 National Conference and matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup at Peter Mokaba Stadium.
