Lusaka Province: History & Culture

Discover Lusaka Province

Lusaka Province is Zambia’s smallest by area but its most populous, built around the capital city that gives it its name. British settlers established a rail siding at Lusaka in the early 1900s, and in 1935 the colonial government made it the capital of Northern Rhodesia, moving the administration from Livingstone to a more central site. Kenneth Kaunda unveiled the Freedom Statue on Independence Avenue in 1974 to mark ten years of independence; it now features on the Zambian kwacha. Beyond the city, the province holds the Kafue Flats wetlands and the wild, little-visited Lower Zambezi National Park, on the river across from Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools.
