Zimbabwe's Eastern Highlands
Manicaland Province: History & Culture
Manicaland was one of five provinces created in 1897 during Southern Rhodesia’s early colonial administration, its name drawn from the Manyika, a Shona people native to the region. The province straddles the Eastern Highlands along the Mozambique border, from the mist-covered Bvumba Mountains near Mutare to the quartzite peaks of Chimanimani and Mount Nyangani, Zimbabwe’s highest point at 2,592 m. Tea and coffee estates, timber plantations, and gold and diamond mining built the colonial-era economy, though much of that industry has since declined. Mutare, the provincial capital, lies about 265 km east of Harare on the road into Mozambique.
