SANParks' main rest camp inside Addo Elephant National Park, with a floodlit waterhole, an underground hide and stays from camp sites to guest houses
About the Property
SANParks Addo Rest Camp, also known as Main Camp, is the national park's own rest camp inside Addo Elephant National Park, off the R342 near the village of Addo and about 70 km from Nelson Mandela Bay (Gqeberha). It is rated 4.3 out of 5 on LekkeSlaap from 79 reviews, with location scored 4.6 and safety 4.7. Accommodation runs from caravan and tent sites with power points and communal kitchens, through safari tents, forest cabins, rondavels, cottages and chalets, to the Hapoor and Domkrag guest houses, which each sleep six and overlook the waterhole. Most units are self-catering.
Staying inside the park means wildlife viewing carries on after the gates close. The floodlit waterhole lookout and an underground hide let you watch game without getting back in the car, and the rondavels overlook the waterhole too. There is also the SASOL Red Bishop bird hide and the PPC Discovery Trail, a walking trail accessible to visually and mobility-impaired visitors. SANParks runs guided game drives (children under six are not permitted), guided horse trails and hop-on guides who join you in your own vehicle. The camp has an à-la-carte restaurant, a shop for snacks and basic supplies, a fuel station and a pool for overnight guests. Gate and reception are open from 07:00 to 19:00, the camp does not accept cash, and there is a 4.42 m height restriction on the entrance road.
Guests on LekkeSlaap mention the people as much as the place. One wrote: "Security is good and safe. Lovely with all the staff so friendly and pleasant. Camp clean, bathrooms clean." Another found their unit "basic but all we needed. Comfortable and peaceful."
