Africa's Last Absolute Monarchy
Eswatini: History & Culture
Eswatini’s earliest inhabitants were Khoisan hunter-gatherers, later displaced by Bantu-speaking farmers who settled the region over many centuries. The Swazi kingdom itself traces to King Ngwane III, who founded his capital at Shiselweni in the 18th century, and grew under Mswati II, whose name the country still carries. After the Second Boer War, Britain administered the territory as a protectorate until independence on 6 September 1968.
Known as Swaziland until 2018, the kingdom was renamed Eswatini — “land of the Swazis” — by King Mswati III on 19 April 2018, marking 50 years of independence and avoiding confusion with Switzerland. Eswatini remains one of the world’s last absolute monarchies, its royal Incwala ceremony still central to national life.
