Chobe: History & Culture

Discover Chobe

Chobe District occupies Botswana’s far north, where the Chobe River forms borders with Namibia and Zambia before joining the Zambezi at Kazungula, one of the few places on Earth where four countries — Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe — meet. Its capital, Kasane, is the gateway to Chobe National Park, Botswana’s first national park, proclaimed in 1968 after decades as a protected reserve. The park shelters one of Africa’s largest elephant populations, with tens of thousands gathering along the riverfront each dry season. The district is also home to the Basubiya people, whose Chiikuhane language and river-based traditions have shaped the area for generations.
