South Africa’s best time to visit depends entirely on what you want to do. Here’s a month-by-month breakdown for wildlife, beaches, the Cape Winelands and the Garden Route.

May to September — Dry Season (Best for Safari)

The dry winter months are the premier time for wildlife viewing across South Africa. Vegetation thins out, animals concentrate around waterholes, and the absence of summer haze makes for better game viewing and photography. In Kruger National Park, June–August delivers the best conditions — cool mornings, clear skies, and animals highly visible against the dry bush.

The Highveld (Johannesburg, Pretoria) is cold at night (sometimes below 5°C) but gloriously sunny during the day. Pack layers. The Western Cape coast is cool and occasionally rainy — this is actually a good time for Stellenbosch wine tasting, when the valleys are lush with autumn colour.

October to April — Summer & Wet Season

Summer brings heat, afternoon thunderstorms (mostly in Gauteng and the interior) and the green season to Kruger — dramatic skies, newborn animals, lush vegetation and migrant birds. Wildlife is slightly harder to spot but the landscape is spectacular. Malaria risk is higher in Kruger and Limpopo.

This is the best time for the Cape peninsula and Garden Route — the Western Cape’s Mediterranean summer delivers long, warm, dry days perfect for coastal driving. December and January are the peak season; book well in advance.

Our Recommendation

For a first visit, May to August offers the best combination: excellent safari conditions in Kruger, manageable temperatures in Cape Town (pack a jacket), and peak whale watching on the Hermanus coast. Avoid the South African school holidays (mid-December to mid-January, and late June–July) for best pricing and availability.
