Moshoeshoe's First Refuge, Now Lesotho's Ski Gateway
Butha-Buthe Travel Guide: History & Culture
Updated 10 October 2026
Butha-Buthe is the northern gateway to Lesotho. It sits in the Maloti foothills close to the South African border. From here the road climbs to a cave with San rock art, a mountain national park, the Afriski ski resort and the high Moteng Pass. This guide covers the district and the town, with getting there, history, things to do, where to stay and when to go. Dated facts are marked “checked October 2026”.
The district and the town are two separate pages on this site. This page covers the district. The town has its own guide.
One travel page puts the town about 120 km from Maseru, roughly 3 hours by car (checked October 2026; the source is undated).
Three crossings are relevant. Hours are as listed in the sources (checked October 2026). Confirm them with the official border authorities before you travel.
Moteng Pass (2,820 m) and Mahlasela Pass are the two connections between Butha-Buthe and Mokhotlong. Moteng Pass is tarred. It climbs about 25 km and gains 1,113 m. Road quality worsens past Afriski, with patchy tar and potholes toward Mokhotlong (checked October 2026). One older source mentions a daily bus linking Butha-Buthe, Oxbow and Mokhotlong. Verify it locally before relying on it.
The name is translated as “place of lying down”. It comes from Butha-Buthe Mountain, the flat-topped sandstone mountain to the north. According to a search summary, Moshoeshoe I used the mountain as a fortified base from about 1821 to 1823, before moving to Thaba Bosiu. This date range has not been confirmed in a history source.
Wikipedia says the town was founded in 1884, so that the local ruler could pay taxes there rather than travel to Hlotse.
Liphofung, in a tributary valley of the Hololo River, is the district’s best-known heritage site. It is a Clarens-sandstone cave overhang with San rock art and Stone Age deposits. Moshoeshoe I used it as a stopover. The site covers about 4.5 ha and was built largely with local labour.
Liphofung lies off the road to Oxbow and Mokhotlong, on a concrete road that any vehicle can use. It has a visitor centre with displays on Basotho culture and San rock art, a shop, toilets and light refreshments. Guided walks are offered. Chalets are listed at Liphofung. We did not find current entry fees or opening hours (checked October 2026). The LHDA leaflet carries a tariff section, so ask the site or check that leaflet before you go.
Ts’ehlanyane lies in a dead-end valley in the Maloti, with peaks above 3,000 m. Its best-known walk is the trail to Matsa-mararo Falls. Wildlife includes jackals, baboons and small antelope, with no large predators. A 4×4 guide published in 2026 recommends a high-clearance vehicle and says a 4×4 is essential in winter. Several sources place the park in Leribe District rather than Butha-Buthe, but it is reached from the Butha-Buthe side and is about 175 km from Maseru, according to a search summary.
This is the Moshoeshoe fortress site, with a sandstone plateau. No visitor facilities have been confirmed (checked October 2026), so treat it as a landmark to see rather than a developed attraction.
Afriski is on the Moteng route at Oxbow. The 2026 season ran from 6 June to 30 August. It has 2 lifts and 1.8 km of slopes between 3,030 m and 3,222 m, open 09:00 to 16:00. A main-season day ticket cost ZAR 650 for adults and ZAR 500 for children (skiresort.info, checked October 2026). The 2026 season is over, so confirm the 2027 dates and prices before you plan. A Lesotho Tribune article covers an Afriski ski festival. We did not find a date for it.
The tarred Moteng Pass is a scenic mountain drive in its own right, climbing to 2,820 m on the way to Mokhotlong.
We have not verified any town restaurants, so we do not list any (checked October 2026). Liphofung serves light refreshments, and Maliba serves dinner on site. Self-catering chalets are a good option if you plan to stock up in town first.
Snow and skiing run from June to August. Summer suits hiking. The town has a Cwb climate with 666 mm of rain a year, according to Wikipedia.
Butha-Buthe works well as a base for Liphofung, Ts’ehlanyane, Oxbow and Afriski, Moteng Pass and onward travel to Mokhotlong. Check the town guide, the Caledonspoort border guide and our Lesotho pages for the next leg.
