Caledonspoort is a small crossing between Fouriesburg in the Free State and Butha-Buthe in northern Lesotho. If you have searched for the “Butha-Buthe border gate”, this is the post you want. It is not the Maseru crossing: travellers heading for Lesotho’s capital use Maseru Bridge, a separate border post further south-west.
The post links Fouriesburg, in South Africa’s Free State, with Butha-Buthe, in Lesotho’s Butha-Buthe District. The South African Revenue Service (SARS) lists it as the Caledonspoort Border Post, Free State region, city Fouriesburg. The Lesotho side is run by the Lesotho Revenue Authority.
The crossing is the Caledonspoort Bridge over the Caledon River, which forms the border here. Wikipedia’s border table shows unnamed roads on both sides, so we do not give road numbers here.
| Period | South African side | Lesotho side | Source | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | 06:00–22:00 daily | 06:00–22:00 daily | Wikipedia’s Lesotho–South Africa border table, and the WFP Logistics Cluster border page | 6 Oct 2026 |
| Festive season 2023 | 06:00–midnight on 15, 16 and 23 December and 2 January; 24 hours on 22 December | Not separately stated | SAnews (sanews.gov.za), published 3 December 2023 | 6 Oct 2026 |

Check before you travel. The SARS border posts page lists Caledonspoort but shows no hours. It gives two numbers: SARS on 0800 007277 and Home Affairs on 0800 601190. The Lesotho Revenue Authority runs the Lesotho side, and the logistics page lists +266 2232 4452 for it. Festive-season hours change from year to year, so look for the latest Border Management Authority notice before a December trip.
We could not find an official step-by-step procedure for Caledonspoort. In general you deal with South African immigration when leaving and Lesotho immigration and customs when entering. Treat that as a rough guide and follow the signs and officials at the post.
We found no measured waiting times, so we will not guess any. A logistics source points to Friday and Sunday afternoons as the busy times. A travel aggregator advises avoiding weekends, public holidays and the start or end of school holidays. The road is paved on both sides, so you do not need a 4×4. This is unlike Sani Pass.
This list comes from an AA article dated December 2020, so confirm that it is still current.

Entry rules depend on your passport. For British passport holders, the UK government’s travel advice says the passport must be valid for at least 90 days after the date you arrive, with at least 4 blank pages, because both the Lesotho and South African posts stamp it, and that visits of up to 90 days need no visa. Other nationalities should check with Lesotho’s immigration authorities or a Lesotho mission before travelling. You also need to meet South Africa’s entry rules on the way back.
If you are driving a rental car, ask the rental company for written permission to take it into Lesotho before you set off.
We have not confirmed other facilities at the post itself, such as ATMs, currency exchange, SIM cards, food or toilets.
