Eastern Province: History & Culture

Discover Eastern Province

Eastern Province takes its character from the Luangwa Valley and the Chewa and Ngoni peoples who farm its plateau. The Ngoni arrived in the 1830s–40s, migrating north from present-day South Africa during the Mfecane under leaders including Zwangendaba, and later Paramount Chief Mpezeni settled the area around Chipata. The Chewa, under Paramount Chief Kalonga Gawa Undi, trace the Kulamba ceremony back to the 15th century. In 1968 Zambia’s government under Kenneth Kaunda resisted a Malawian claim to the territory. Today the province is best known internationally for South Luangwa National Park, where Norman Carr pioneered Africa’s walking safari in the 1950s.
