Johannesburg, Pretoria & Economic Heartland of Africa
Gauteng: History & Culture
Gauteng — meaning “place of gold” in Nguni — is South Africa’s most populous and economically powerful province. It was the discovery of the Witwatersrand Gold Reef in 1886 that catapulted Johannesburg from a tent city to a major metropolis. Apartheid history looms large: the Sharpeville Massacre (1960), the Soweto Uprising (1976), and the brutal suppression of the anti-apartheid movement all left indelible marks on the province.
