Central Province: History & Culture
Central Province sits on Zambia’s high plateau, between Lusaka and the Copperbelt. Its capital, Kabwe, was called Broken Hill under colonial rule; a nearby mine gave its name to the Kabwe Skull, a roughly 299,000-year-old early-human fossil found there in 1921, among Africa’s most significant early palaeoanthropological finds. In 1958 and 1960, nationalists led by Kenneth Kaunda gathered at Mulungushi Rock, north of Kabwe, to found the United National Independence Party, the movement that carried Zambia to independence in 1964; the site is still called the birthplace of Zambian independence. The province is also home to Kasanka National Park, known for its fruit-bat migration, and to Kundalila Falls on the Muchinga escarpment.
