Mozambique: History & Culture
Mozambique’s coast has drawn traders for over a thousand years: Swahili and Arab merchants settled Ilha de Moçambique by the 14th century, and Vasco da Gama landed in 1498. Portugal ruled from 1505 until a guerrilla war led by FRELIMO ended in independence on 25 June 1975. Independence brought no peace: a brutal civil war between FRELIMO and RENAMO ran from 1977 to 1992, killing roughly a million people. Since a 1992 peace accord, Mozambique has rebuilt steadily, and today its 2,700 km Indian Ocean coastline, coral archipelagos and restored parks like Gorongosa draw a growing stream of visitors.
